Research and Scholarly Activity

Willis-Knighton Health System is committed to creating an environment of scholarship and inquiry for our resident physicians, and in the process to develop our residency programs dedicated significant resources in this area. You can learn more about the organization’s commitment to research here.

In the first year of training, residents receive education in research methodology and medical literature review and engage in quality improvement, patient safety, cost of care and research activities in collaboration with a teaching faculty and resident peers.

The expectation is that residents either a submit poster presentations, abstracts and/or journal articles for publication, or complete a 30 to 60-minute presentation to peers and faculty by the end of the second year of training. In addition, residents are required to present case reports/discussions at least 6 times by the end of training and lead a minimum of one group discussion such as Journal Club, Morbidity & Mortality, clinical pathological conference, board review, or a lecture of their choice.

Residents are continually monitored in their scholarly pursuits by a member of the core faculty and a copy of their final work is added to their online portfolio in the residency management system for accurate and complete record keeping.
