Our Rural Family Medicine Residency Program provides residents with a well-balanced educational program covering multiple clinical disciplines designed to facilitate preparation for this specialty. We will utilize the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) Clinical Practice Guidelines for care of patients. We will also demonstrate substantial compliance with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Educations (ACGME) requirements for residency in Rural Family Medicine.
Our rural FM residents will also have the opportunity to attend didactic sessions for our other residency programs, primarily internal medicine, when there are topics presented at the internal medicine academic half day that are relevant for our family medicine residents.
Morning Patient Rounds and Handoffs will be held daily in the inpatient units. A weekly Morning Report on Friday mornings provides for in-depth review of the care of an individual Family Medicine patient with a unique condition or complicated case. This is an inter-disciplinary conference and includes nursing, case management, pharmacy, and other specialties as needed. Didactic lectures are scheduled during the Academic Half Day on Tuesday afternoons from 1-5pm. Rural Family Medicine Residents will be taught through hands-on training, didactics curriculum, including lectures, workshops, employee development department lectures, quality department lectures, and community partners. Each Resident must present interactive clinical case presentations during the didactic sessions throughout the academic year. Journal Club will be held for one hour on the third Tuesday of every month. Departmental Grand Rounds will be held for one hour on the fourth Tuesday of every month. The Mortality and Morbidity Conference will be held for one hour on the first Tuesday of every month. An off-site Rural Family Medicine Wellness Retreat will be held with faculty involvement annually.
Evaluation: As part of the Rural Family Medicine didactic program, an evaluation form for each of the didactic sessions will be sent out to be completed by the Residents attending the session via the residency management system. The evaluations will be monitored by the Program Director, presented to the Program Evaluation Committee (PEC), and incorporated into the Annual Program Evaluation (APE).
Resident Presentation: There will be multiple didactic presentations provided to the Residents and by the Residents throughout their training. The Resident presentations will be based on the Resident’s program year and will be guided by a faculty member.
Didactic Curriculum: The Residency’s didactic program is comprised of a rotating schedule of clinical topics/basic sciences including:
In addition to these offerings, Residents participate in a weekly clinical case conference with co-Residents and Faculty. All residents are expected to attend the didactic program offerings unless they are on vacation or leave. We will schedule monthly Grand Rounds with internal and external speakers presenting important topics. Didactics will be available by videoconferencing (Microsoft Teams) as needed.
Residents receive web-based annual training on HIPAA, recommended quality improvement and patient safety techniques, Electronic Medical Record (EMR) updates, and other hospital-wide required training.
Residents are expected to complete modules from the AMA GME Competency Education Program, and will have access to online medical education courses, board review, journals and textbooks, medical news/updates, and distance learning solutions.
