Dr. James Michael McCarty is a board-certified physician in both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics and serves as Core Faculty for the Rural Family Medicine Residency Program at Claiborne Memorial Medical Center in Homer, Louisiana. In addition to his faculty role, he provides emergency department coverage and inpatient care for both adult and pediatric patients. Dr. McCarty completed his Internal Medicine Pediatrics residency at LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, where he developed a strong interest in rural and underserved healthcare. His clinical work spans emergency medicine, inpatient medicine, pediatric care, and critical care in rural hospital settings.

Before returning to the United States for residency training, Dr. McCarty practiced primary care for nearly a decade in southern Mexico, operating a solo outpatient clinic that served rural communities. This experience strengthened his commitment to improving access to care and addressing healthcare disparities. He remains active in community service and volunteers as a physician at the MLK Health Center in Shreveport, providing care to uninsured and underserved patients. Dr. McCarty also participates in community health education initiatives focused on improving access to care for Hispanic populations.

Dr. McCarty is fluent in English and Spanish and has conversational proficiency in Mixe del Istmo, an indigenous language of southern Mexico. He earned his Doctor of Medicine from the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla School of Medicine in Puebla, Mexico. Outside of medicine, he has been an avid runner for more than 20 years and recently began taking piano lessons. Dr. McCarty is licensed to practice medicine in Louisiana, Mississippi, and New Mexico.
